I'm a little depressed about 2010. October 22 will mark the end of my forties, which is a big deal for me in so many ways. For one thing, it means that I only have ten months to become a cougar. Is there even a category for women in their fifties who have sex with younger men (the rare snow leopard perhaps)? For another thing, 50 means I will definitely be on the downward and no doubt very slippery slope of my life. I probably passed my chronological pinnacle some years ago (unless I live to age 100 or more, which I really really hope I don't do; my plan is to start engaging in risky behaviours at age 70 – smoking, foregoing seat belts, having unprotected sex – to minimize my chances of becoming a centenarian), but psychologically and physically 50 seems to mark the end of so many things. I would list them, but I don't have the energy (which would be on the list if I did have the energy to produce one).
Work is a bit of a worry too. Funding for the research project I've been working on since 2001 ends at the end of 2010, and unless we can find more $$$... the idea of my job ending is not just depressing because of the loss of income. Work, I realize, is a bit of a social event for me (which is probably leading you to question the quality of my social life). Although I really don't have that much in common with my co-workers – for example, one of them doesn't appear to believe in recycling and I am constantly inspecting the contents of her garbage for stuff that can be put in the blue box instead, another one cut short a stay in New York City so that she could shop at an outlet mall in Pennsylvania, and yet another spends substantial amounts of time on the internet cooking fake food and decorating her fake cafĂ© with moose antlers – they are very dear to me. And entertaining. The non-believer in recycling believed for years that her cousin had graduated from the Disney University with a law degree. “The Disney University? Who would trust a lawyer who has that degree hanging on their wall?” But she was adamant. We finally did a Google search and found out that while there really is a Disney University, its mission is to teach Disney employees customer service skills and how to talk in a Mickey falsetto. I remain unsure as to whether her cousin actually has a law degree, or whether her aunt and uncle lied about that to my coworker as well. I fear that if my job ends, all my blogging material will too.
This year is also the year that Lost ends. It's like I've been reading an un-put-downable novel rivalling A Chronicle of Ancient Sunlight in length (information supplied courtesy of Deloney) and I'm finally coming to the last page, at which point the characters will desert me. I will be bereft.* I will wear black.* Which thankfully is slimming. Fat cougars are an abomination, and unlikely to catch any prey.
To the hunt...

Ha -- hitting 50 is one of the best things that has happened to me. I quit really caring what other people (except my daughter) thought about me and quit worrying about my age. Turning 40 was very hard for me, but not 50.
I'll wear black with you when Lost ends.
I'm looking forward to what 2010 brings, for the most part.
Happy New Year, Helen.
I'd not heard that "cougar" meant a woman in her 40s who has sex with younger men. Hmm.
I think the term for a woman in her 50's who has sex for younger men is "lucky".
What does it say about me/you that I love reading you whether you are joyful or angsting? I certainly don't want you to angst, but I sure do enjoy hearing about it. Hmmmm.
I didn't quite realize what the age limit was on cougarhood. I can tell you that I've noted some Vermont women in their 50s having sex with younger men. Just sayin'.
I will be pretty sad about Lost too (but also a tad relieved, as I always am when an addiction is ended for me). When it's done, I need to watch it from beginning to end, straight through, as I have without doubt lost lots of its threads. We can all wear black together.
Wait...cut short a stay in NYC to go to an outlet mall? Shudder!
I don't believe there is an age limit on cougerhood...but the male equivalent remains the unflattering term "Dirty Old Man!"
btw, I sent you a wee Christmas e-mail but you did not acknowledge it. I'm afraid I am forced to give you the Silent Treatment.

Ok, that was the Silent Treatment. I hope your holidays were fun! And cheer up!
You don't seem or act or look 50. Your eyesight is going, particularly in dimly-lit theatres, and you've become a bit suspicious of your co-workers, but otherwise you could lie and tell people you're in your 40's for many years, I'm sure.
Not that you should - 50 is the new 35, I've heard. I hope so, because that would make me 29.
See you in two days, eh?
I think cougarhood is very time-sensitive. Deloney old boy, sorry, I didn't get said email until yesterday. I've sent you a return greeting.
Indigo, I'm watching from Season 1 right now. Another good thing about my coworkers: one of them has all the past seasons of Lost. Maureen, did you get Season 5 for Christmas? :)
Maureen, in spite of what I said, I'm NOT ready to go back yet. Gone will be my wild nights of staying up until 2 am watching Lost and sleeping in the following mornings.
Was it the Crossings Outlet Mall in Tannersville?
Sorry Helen - didn't get it. I did get season 5 of Get Smart.
Susan, I think it was near Scranton.
Simply wonderful, as usual.
Happy New Year.
Ok, I just found this in my email from Air NZ:
"JOIN THE GRABASEAT COUGAR PRIDE AT THE SEVENS
Cougars are women 35 and over who prefer their meat rare. Their prey are at least 10 years their junior. Grabaseat is looking for 60 of these exquisite creatures to join them at the sold out NZI Sevens in Wellington as our pride of cougar cheerleaders.
All you have to do is register and upload a photo of your hunting pack (no more than 4 cougars) to be in to win tickets to the NZI Sevens. You and your pack will need to make your own way to Wellington and if you plan on sleeping you will need to find your own den.
Grabaseat will be giving the winners cougar costumes and the equipment to make enough noise to attract the attention of young males. And to make sure the pride doesn’t go hungry, 10 brave young men recruited by ZM will be thrown in as fresh meat to the winners in Wellington.
So if you’re more roar than meow, check out our video about the mating habits of cougars and sign up here."
Helen - you need to come to Wellington!

Oh my Mali! I'll start practicing my cartwheels...
Helen, I'm absolutely speechless and tears are streaming down my face. And if 50 is the new 35 that's great because now we're the same age!
You're beautiful. I love when you write like this. Made my evening.
